Lamassu, Shedu, or Apsasu are the guardian spirits of ancient Mesopotamia.  Combining the aspects of Man or Woman, with Bull, Lion and Eagle, they were considered protector spirits of all living things and represented the zodiac.  One modern interpretation, is the strength of a bull, the freedom of an eagle, and the intelligence of a human being  Two Lamassu would often guard the doorways of Assyrian palaces and temples, and people would often inscribe their image on clay tablets and bury them beneath their homes to ensure a happy house hold.
